Titled The Nearer in Blood, The Nearer Bloody, this satirical etching by James Gillray was published in London on January 26, 1793—just days after the execution of King Louis XVI. The print targets Louis’ cousin, the Duke of Orléans (Philippe Égalité), who infamously voted for the king’s death in the National Convention. Gillray depicts the duke as an executioner, axe in hand, looming over a kneeling Louis XVI. A sans-culotte clutches a basket with the king’s severed head, while a distraught woman—likely Marie Antoinette—pleads for mercy.
